Prospective Students

Welcome by Associate Chair

A very warm welcome to all who have arrived at this web page! You are visiting this site because you are interested in our programmes. The School of Humanities (SoH) offers graduate degrees through five programmes: Chinese, English Literature, History, Linguistics & Multilingual Studies, and Philosophy. We are a vibrant and young school with 126 faculty members and a total of 157 graduate students spread across the five programmes. More than fifty percent of our students are undertaking a Masters or a PhD by research. The rest are pursuing their MA by coursework.

At the School of Humanities, we have accomplished, dedicated, and experienced faculty members who have vested interests in imparting their expertise and knowledge to their graduate students. Our committed professors come from all around the world and they are eager and happy to share their experience with you through inventive methodology and contagious enthusiasm for acquiring new knowledge.

We have the advantage of being in Singapore, a nexus of social, economic, political and cultural ferment and change. Singapore’s strategic location at the hub of communications between the west and the east, between East Asia and South Asia, and in the midst of a region with a greater domestic product than India, make Singapore a good place to observe developments as they occur, which affect the whole world. We are a stone’s throw away from the Asia-Pacific corridor, allowing our faculty and students ample opportunities to explore research sites, attend conferences, and participate in exchange programmes with other universities. Singapore is one of the safest and cleanest places in the world with parks, cultural institutions, and other schools, which stimulate all kinds of intellectual and artistic activities. NTU is in the midst of a continuous programme of infrastructural development with many new facilities for both education and extracurricular activities. There are many informal locations where intellectual discussions take place in addition to classrooms. Our graduate students can derive many benefits from these campus-wide developments.

At the Graduate Studies Programme @ SoH, we are aided by a competent, dedicated, and energetic team of administrators. When you join us as our graduate students, you will find yourselves in a congenial environment where you will find approachable faculty, administrative staff, and peers. You will find ample opportunities to develop skills in communication, leadership and personal attributes required to establish a significant career whether in academia, research, or other professional fields. You will also find attractive and generous scholarship opportunities.

We value our graduate students as we consider you our prized assets. We encourage you to participate actively in the School by taking part in general events and our faculty’s research. We appreciate your important feedback and we urge you to assist us in making SoH a conducive place for academic study and research.

As Associate Chair of Research at SoH, I want to thank you for choosing our school. I wish you success in your academic studies and research. For those of you who are considering SoH as an option for graduate studies, I would like to encourage you to apply. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries.
